About these terms
Jotter (www.jotter.study) is an AI tutor for secondary school students. It's run by Declan Gallagher, a sole trader in Australia. In these terms, "we" and "us" means Declan, as the person who runs Jotter, and "you" means you, the person using it.
By using Jotter you agree to these terms. Our privacy notice explains what we do with your information. If you don't agree with these terms, please don't use Jotter.
Your account
- Jotter is for people aged 13 and over. If you're under 13, please don't use it.
- You sign in with your Google account. Keep it to yourself: an account is for one person, and you're responsible for what's done with it.
- If you think someone else has used your account, tell us straight away at team@jotter.study and we'll sign it out on every device. If they got into your Google account, change its password too.
What Pip is, and isn't
- Pip is an AI tutor, powered by Claude, made by Anthropic. It's not a person.
- Pip can get things wrong, even when it sounds sure. Check anything important with your teacher or your textbook.
- The marks Pip gives are practice feedback to help you learn. They're not official grades, and they don't predict your exam results.
- Jotter helps you learn. It doesn't replace your teachers, your school or professional advice.
Using Jotter fairly
Please don't use Jotter to:
- hand in Pip's work as your own where your school or exam board doesn't allow it;
- bully, threaten or harm anyone, or share anything hateful, sexual, violent or illegal;
- upload things you don't have the right to share, or other people's private information;
- try to break Jotter, get round its limits, overload it, or copy it with automated tools;
- get Pip to help with anything harmful or illegal.
If an account breaks these rules, we may pause it or close it. Where we can, we'll tell you why first.
Your work
The worksheets you open, the work you write and your conversations with Pip are yours. You let us store them and handle them as far as we need to run Jotter for you, which includes sending them to Anthropic so Pip can answer. The privacy notice explains this in full.
Only open worksheets you're allowed to use, such as ones from your teacher or your own.
Jotter itself, its design, its drawings and Pip belong to us. Please don't copy them.
Free and Pro
- Jotter is free to start, and Free includes a weekly helping of Pip. When it's used up, it refills the next week.
- To keep Jotter free for everyone, we may change how big the weekly helping is.
- Pro, which gives you more of Pip, is coming soon. It will have its own terms for paying, which you'll see before you subscribe.
Keys of your own
Jotter can also use an API key that someone has added: a code, a bit like a password, that lets Jotter use their own Claude or ElevenLabs account. That account's own terms apply, including its age rules. ElevenLabs, for example, only allows people aged 18 and over, so please don't add an ElevenLabs key if you're under 18. Whoever owns the key is responsible for what it's used for and what it costs.
When things change
Jotter is new, and it will change as it grows. We may add, change or stop features. We'll update these terms when we need to, and the date at the top will say when. If a change affects you, we'll tell you in Jotter before it happens. If you don't want to carry on under the new terms, you can stop using Jotter.
We work hard to keep Jotter running, but we can't promise it will always be available, or free of mistakes.
Stopping
You can stop using Jotter whenever you like. To have your account and everything in it deleted, email privacy@jotter.study from the address on your account.
What we're responsible for
- Jotter comes with guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law that can't be excluded, such as that we'll provide it with due care and skill. Nothing in these terms takes away those guarantees, or any of your other legal rights. If you're unsure about them, the ACCC's guide to consumer rights explains them, and your state or territory's consumer protection agency can help.
- If we don't meet those guarantees, or we break these terms, we'll put it right. We're also responsible for any loss or harm that causes you, where we could reasonably have foreseen it.
- As far as the law allows, we're not responsible for exam results or other decisions made using what Pip says, or for losses we couldn't reasonably have foreseen.
- Please keep your own copies of anything important. Jotter saves your work, but we can't promise nothing will ever be lost.
The law
These terms are governed by the law of Western Australia. If there's a disagreement, you can take it to the courts of Western Australia. If you live in another state or territory, you can also take it to the courts or tribunals there.
